As our season in Florida comes to an end, we have been switching things up and teaching advanced classes on Fat Cat, a 35' Fortuna island Spirit Catamaran, inbetween our family and couples cruising classes on Barefoot. We had the pleasure of sailing for a week with a couple from northern Florida who want to buy a catamaran and retire to the Caribbean on it sailing and scuba diving the reefs.
Adaptation is a way of life when you live aboard and especially when you do back to back turnarounds of charters. This week's adaptation was having a sleeve that helps guide the top of our roller furling jib fall apart making it near impossible to roll and unfurl our jib with guests. Derrek told me he was a little more mechanically inclined than me so of course I had to prove him wrong and had him hoist me up the mast as I went to work trying to figure out our dilemma.
We found a solution by Derrek cutting a slit up the side of a piece of head hose we had left over from a previous project and me inserting it on the interior of our furler. For good measure we also used duct tape to make sure it wasn't going anywhere... afterall, duct tape fixes everything, right?
Last week we had the pleasure of sailing with a fun family exploring the Upper Florida keys as they completed ASA 101 and ASA 103. It also made our all time record of the youngest guest we've every sailed with, a cute and energetic 3 year old who loved Disney's planes and rescue Bots. During the week we were affectionately nicknamed "Captain Stuffi" and "Captain DareWick".
Cooper was a favorite as they played pirates and shared each others toys.
On family trips we like to do half of the day teaching ASA requirements and gaining "wheel/sail time, and the other half as "family time" where we find a cool swimming spot, an island to explore, or resturant to get ice cream and desserts.
Although I love to sail and explore the Florida Keys teaching other people about this cool lifestyle, I also like to do crafts and keep busy with small projects that have nothing to do with "work". One of my favorites is making quilts. I made my first quilt at the age of 4 with the guidance and expertise of my Grandma. Ever since, I have been making all sizes of quilts from twin, to king sizes. I currently have plans to make 4 coordinating quilts that can work as duvets for our 30' Hunter once she's ready to take on over night guests. It also gives me something to do in the evenings or while guests are working on their exams.
Derrek and I have been helping to fill out our schedules by filling in here and there on Harold's new branch of day sails touring Biscayne National Park. We load up sailboats with kaysks, paddle boards, and snorkel gear spending 2 hours sailing out to our island park destinations, 2 hours visiting the island / playing in the water and 2 hours sailing back. Harold runs these trips out of the Biscayne National park visitors center in Homestead with up to 6 passengers onboard. On weekdays we visit my favorite island, Boca Ch
On most days, there is only one boat scheduled for the day so if Derrek and I are working will help run together to manage the sails and help with dock lines. When it's busy with 2 boats scheduled we run different boats, typically Derrek on our oldboat, Morning g Dance a 41' Morgan Outisland and me on Adventurer a 44'Gulfstar.
